Dr Jackie Gray appeared on BBC to discuss the exciting news that Carents® has been selected to join the IMPACT (Improving Adult Care Together) programme.
This prestigious collaboration with the UK Centre for Implementing Evidence in Adult Social Care is a significant step towards improving adult social care in the UK.
The IMPACT programme, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Health Foundation, is a £15 million initiative designed to enhance care services for older adults, particularly those living with frailty. Carents® is one of just 22 successful projects chosen to take part in the 12-month programme.
In the interview, Jackie explained how Carents® plays a vital role in raising the voices of “carents” – the often unseen adults providing care for their elderly relatives.
“Unpaid carers are the backbone of support for older people, yet they face so many challenges. Our focus is to ensure that their voices are heard by commissioners and decision-makers, so we can help improve the support they receive,” said Jackie.
The discussion also highlighted the pressing issues faced by Carents, including the complexities of the ageing care trajectory, the emotional and financial burdens of caregiving, and the impact on familial relationships. “Our goal is to give Carents a national voice that can influence future policies and strategic decisions,” Jackie continued.
Jackie also reflected on the incredible growth of Carents®’ community, which now supports over 35,000 individuals. “The feedback we receive is incredibly positive. People describe Carents® as a lifeline – a vital resource – and it’s truly heartening to see the community’s strength and compassion,” Jackie shared.
Looking ahead, Jackie expressed her excitement about the IMPACT programme, which will officially launch in September 2025. “This project will be crucial in ensuring Carents and their loved ones receive the support they need to stay safe and well. We’re determined to make sure no Carent feels invisible, and this partnership with IMPACT will help us achieve that.”
